UN chief to meet with World Bank finance ministers

UNITED NATIONS, April 19 (Xinhua) — UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is to travel to Washington D.C. to attend a meeting on Friday with World Bank finance ministers, UN spokesman told reporters here Thursday.

According to a statement issued here by Ban’s spokesperson, the meeting will be on the upcoming Rio+20 conference, slated to be held in Brazil in June.

The secretary-general has previously expressed the need for creative thinking from the international community when it meets in Rio to discuss such issues as food security, energy shortage, financial crisis and environmental degradation.

While in D.C., Ban is set to attend the “Delivering sustainable energy for all, opportunities at Rio+20” conference hosted by the Center for Global Development and Climate Advisors, said the statement.

The Rio+20 Earth Summit, also known as the UN Conference on Sustainable Development, is already one of the biggest conferences, with more than 110 heads of state set to attend.
